CLIMBING IN KALYMNOS

Climbing in Kalymnos is now one of the island’s most distinctive and internationally recognized features however, its development is relatively recent. The history of climbing in Kalymnos began in the late 1990s, when French and Italian climbers discovered the island’s impressive limestone cliffs and realized that they had stumbled upon an unexplored “treasure” in the world of sport climbing.

History

The year 1997 is considered a milestone, as it marks the opening of the first climbing routes in the Grande Grotta area — an impressive cave featuring large overhangs and stalactite formations, which soon became a symbol of Kalymnos in the climbing world. The quality of the rock, primarily limestone, combined with the island’s mild climate, provided ideal conditions for climbing year-round, especially during spring and autumn. Since then, with the support of both the local community and international climbers and specialized professionals, Kalymnos’ climbing infrastructure has developed rapidly. Thousands of routes of varying difficulty levels have been established, most of them fully equipped with modern protection and bolts, while safety and route maintenance standards have been firmly set. Many of these routes have been designed by renowned climbers from Europe and America.

Kalymnos today as a global climbing destination

Today, Kalymnos boasts over 3,400 climbing routes distributed across dozens of climbing sectors (crags), such as Grande Grotta, Spartacus, Odyssey, Arhi, Sikati Cave, and Kalydna. The routes cover the full spectrum of difficulty levels, ranging from easy (5a) for beginners to extremely challenging (9a) for professional athletes. The fact that climbing takes place in locations with spectacular sea views adds a unique experience to the activity. In addition to the routes, Kalymnos has developed comprehensive services for visiting climbers: equipment shops, climbing schools, local guides (topos), accommodation tailored to athletes' needs, and annual events. A highlight is the "Kalymnos Climbing Festival," held periodically, attracting both professional and amateur climbers from around the world.

A combination of nature, safety and hospitality

One of the main reasons Kalymnos has established itself as a premier destination is the ideal combination it offers of a natural environment, high safety standards, and local hospitality. The island is not “touristic” in the conventional sense – it retains its authentic, tranquil character, which many climbers prefer as they seek a connection with nature and relaxation.

Climbing for everyone

It is worth noting that Kalymnos is not only for experienced climbers. Many schools offer introductory courses and escorts, while there are routes suitable even for families with children. Also, most climbing areas are located within a short distance from beaches and villages, which allows visitors to easily combine the activity with a vacation.
